Goodyear tyres in stores wars ?

Goodyear s chairman Mr Gaults decided that they would sell Goodyear tyres in the Sears tyre stores. This was fine until the following year he began to sell the Goodyear product through Wall Mart and a chain of tyre stores known as Discount tyre chain. This move angered other Goodyear tyre dealers and were seen these large chains cutting the price of the Goodyear products.

Here in the UK Goodyear owned Kelly Springfield tyres and a lesser known Lee tyres. I was a Kelly dealer in Yorkshire and became very successful, until Goodyear decided that we should be selling Goodyear and not Kelly messing everything up, until we changed brands to Pirelli tyres.

Back to Goodyear ,who in the early nineties began to make good profits again. Goodyear began to expand abroad and had merges with other tyre companies in India (Ceat tyres) and China (Gold Lion tyre). In 1996 Goodyear tyres made a successful take over bid for Debica tyres in Poland, mainly because of the lower pay structure of the Polish workers, thus making bigger profits.

The tyre giants then decided that they would expand to South Africa buying out a company called “Anglovaal Industries” its self a maker of tyres. Goodyear then entered into a manufacturing agreement with Sumitomo tyres in Japan, making tyres for each other in Asia and North America.

They did not finish there they signed an agreement with the “Sava tyre group” of Slovenia, giving Goodyear tyres a controlling share of 60%.Goodyear were also buying up tyre retailing groups and here in the UK they formed a company called “Tyreservices Ltd” formed out of buying out smaller retailers. In America they bought out retail companies Penske Auto Centres and Montgomery-Ward,both combined forming well over a thousand outlets, a massive step forward.

This new tyre enabled a car with a puncture to be driven up to 200 miles at 50 mph which would eliminate the need for a spare wheel. The tyre was not very popular because or its high price tag.

And was later scrapped. This is now ironic because we now use many runflat tyres on the modern type cars, including Goodyear runflats, although these are now going out of favour due to the uncomfortable hard ride for the drivers, due to the extra strength side walls required to run the tyres without air.

RADIAL TYRES In America were not an instant hit ?

Ford motor company had radically changed the way that cars were to run on radial tyres. Starting off in the late sixties by putting radial tyres on their new Lincoln models had set the tone for the future of radial tyres in the American auto industry. By 1973 General motors had started to follow Ford by introducing radial tyres with improved car suspension onto some of their new models. The GM cars had about 11% of their cars fitted with radial tyres, and by now 26% of ford cars were fitted with original equipment radial tyres mainly from Michelin tyres.

By the mid seventies this figure had risen to 90% a by now most cars were equipped with new radial tyres. Not all the tyre companies were still convinced with the radial tyre, the most prominent was the Goodyear tyre and rubber company. Goodyear were reluctant to change all their factories and tooling equipment to enable them to produce the radial tyres that were now becoming very popular. This was going to cost Goodyear tyres millions of dollars and they were reluctant to change strategy. Indeed in 1967 launched a new tyre product to the World called the Polysteel bias belted tyre. I remember these tyres being introduced here in the UK, when I worked for Briggs tyres here in the UK. It was at a time when all the leading tyre makers were trying out new products and this new tyre from Goodyear was no exception.

Goodyear s main problem with the radial tyres , is that they lasted too long and would have meant a reduction in tyre sales. The new polysteel tyre was made with polyester cords and fibreglass belting instead of steel, as in Michelin tyres. Goodyear promoted this new tyre very strongly and many of the American car makers started to introduce this new tyre to their models, indeed by 1970 ,85% of American cars were made using bias belted tyres in place of radial tyres. I remember the special Goodyear promotions here in the UK, but the bottom line is that the new tyre did not take off here in the UK, and as far as I remember did not compliment the suspension of the European produced cars. It was a different situation in America with General motors buying a staggering 30 million tyres a year, meaning that for the time being bias belted tyres were back with a bang.

The bottom line is that the American tyre companies could not make radial tyres, especially steel belted radial tyres. They did not have the technical knowledge and the early attempts to make steel belted radials was abysmal.

Michelin tyres were not prepared to share their superior knowledge about the way that steel belting was produced and how the steel was processed to stop the steel from rusting when penetrated by a puncture and eventually rusting the whole steel belt until the total tyre broke down causing a blow-out. Both Goodyear and Firestone tyre companies came a cropper trying to make steel belted radial tyres but this is for another blog.

Wheel alignment or (tracking)

Wheel alignment or (tracking) are your car's wheels in line all the time?

They aren't necessarily. Speed bumps, high kerbs, pot holes and normal wear and tear on your car's suspension and steering could put the wheels out of alignment (tracking). Misalignment can be felt as your steering wheel may be pulling to the left or the right, in the longer term, it is your car tyres that will suffer – badly out wheel alignment can seriously reduce tyre life.

So, how can you correct poor wheel alignment, making your cars steering and braking better, as well as preserving maximum car tyres life. The good news is that car manufacturers have designed ways and means of adjusting wheel alignment. What happens in a wheel alignment session?

Generally, three things are checked, and adjusted as necessary. The first check establishes that the car wheels are vertical, as viewed from the front or rear this is called “camber and caster”. The second check involves the castor angle. Technically, the castor angle permits the wheels and tyres to return to straight ahead when the car is rolling forward with no steering input. As you know, your front wheels turn from side to side when you are turning the steering wheel (right or left). No matter how the wheels and tyres pivot, there is a line drawn through the centre of the axis on which they pivot and will be vertical. The line has to lean backwards slightly and if it doesn't, the steering will feel very odd. Again, this will be cured by adjustment.

The last check is called the 'toe'. All car suspension has a small degree of flexibility built into it (this is why your steering goes out when you hit an object). So, if the car tyres are parallel at rest, the drag between them and the road as the car moves, would cause this flexibility that would allow the wheels to splay very slightly, this is usually outwards from the bottom.

You would probably not notice this but your tyres would soon tell you that you have a wheel alignment problem, by wearing out the inner edges of their treads. So, the wheels are usually set to 'toe-in', so they run at almost parallel. If the tyres toe out, if the toe-in is too much or if the toe angle varies from side to side, the car tyres will wear out prematurely. Having your wheels aligned would cure this problem.

That used a mirror and lens system. Nowadays, we measure the angles involved using laser wheel alignment equipment. In some cases, worn suspension or steering components mean that a problem will need to be rectified and then adjusted .
Is it possible to stop your car's wheels becoming misaligned and making the tyres suffer? In a word, yes. Don't kerb your car tyres. Avoid potholes and drive round every pot hole carefully. Always go over speed bumps with the tyres on one side of your car. Straddling speed bumps is a major cause of both wheel misalignment and tyre damage.
